Frequently asked questions

3D Printing Technology

What 3D printing technology do you use?

We use FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) technology. FDM is an additive manufacturing process that builds 3D objects layer-by-layer by heating a solid thermoplastic material (filament) and precisely extruding it through a nozzle.

Why do my prints have subtle lines on them?

Because FDM printing builds items line-by-line and layer-by-layer, faint horizontal ridges—called layer lines—are a natural characteristic of the finished product. These lines give 3D-printed items their unique aesthetic and do not compromise the structural integrity of your item.

How accurate or durable are FDM-printed items?

FDM prints offer great dimensional accuracy and structural strength for everyday items, decorative home decor, and functional components. However, items printed in standard PLA are sensitive to high temperatures and shouldn't be exposed to extreme heat or direct sunlight for extended periods.

How is 3D printing more sustainable than traditional manufacturing?

Unlike traditional subtractive manufacturing (like CNC machining, where material is carved away from a solid block), 3D printing is an additive process. We only melt and use the exact amount of plastic required for your design, reducing material waste by up to 80–90%.

Material (PLA)

What is PLA?

PLA (Polylactic Acid) is a thermoplastic biopolymer derived from renewable resources like cornstarch, sugar cane, or cassava roots, rather than petroleum. It is the most popular, versatile, and beginner-friendly material in 3D printing.

Is PLA food-safe?

While raw PLA is non-toxic, it is not recommended to use standard 3D-printed items directly with food or drink. Microscopic gaps between the printed layers can trap moisture and bacteria over time, making items difficult to sanitize completely. This is the reason why we do not offer food-related products.

How heat-resistant is PLA?

PLA has a relatively low heat deflection point (around 55°C to 60°C / 130°F to 140°F). You should avoid leaving PLA items in hot places, like inside a sealed car on a sunny day or near open heat sources, as they may soften or warp.

Is PLA biodegradable?

Yes, but with an important caveat. PLA is industrially compostable. Under controlled conditions in an industrial composting facility (with constant temperatures above 58°C/136°F and specific humidity), PLA degrades into water, CO₂, and biomass in about 3 to 6 months.

Important Note: PLA will not decompose quickly in a standard backyard garden compost or a landfill. Please check if your local waste management system accepts bioplastics in organic waste bins.

What are the available colors?

Please refer to our Color Reference Guide for more details.

Product Care & Orders

How do I clean my 3D-printed items?

Clean your items by wiping them down with a damp cloth and mild soap. Do not put 3D-printed items in the dishwasher, as the high heat will cause the plastic to warp or lose shape.

Can I request custom colors or personalized designs?

Yes! Of course this is possible. Please refer to each product page how each item can be customized based on your preferences (usually it will be colors and if nicknames can be added).

You can reach out to us via our Contact page and channels with your ideas, and we’ll be happy to help.

Can I request or suggest other designs aside from the ones already offered from your webshop?

Of course! Please reach out to us via our Contact page and channels with your ideas, and we’ll be happy to help. We can work on the design and agree how to proceed.

We, however, do not process designs with existing IP in place (think commercially branded designs, movie or animated characters). We only deal with original designs or the designs we get from our Cubee/Hive license.
